After being released from prison after 25 years, New York mob boss Dwight “The General” Manfredi is deported to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Sylvester Stallone’s first starring role in a television series. Dwight “The General” Manfredi: I don’t really go to church… The opening credits sequence shows various photographic and painted views and Oklahoma landmarks superimposed over the New York landscape: A statue of a Sioux Indian chief “Touch the Clouds” wearing a war ring and bone necklace (breastplate) placed on top of the Golden Statue of Liberty in Brooklyn A drill placed on top of the Statue of Liberty The Route 66 Western Gateway Arch over Manhattan’s Main Street.

The borough of Manhattan, New York City, has several numbered “Avenues” intersected by smaller numbered streets. I watched it out of curiosity, without any high expectations, I was just surprised to see Stallone in a TV series. You can sense the tension in the scenes and it also seems quite realistic when the plot demands it. I wouldn’t say it’s funny, but there are some funny scenes that stem from Dwight (Stallone) getting out of a 25 year prison sentence and not being fully integrated into the way the world works now; so I assume the sudden change will bring him some interesting mishaps in the future.

It’s quite a clever script, but not in an overly witty way, which bodes well. Of course Stallone is a huge character, but the rest of the cast looks pretty good. The series literally feels like you’ve taken gangsters written for an early 90s movie and dropped them into 2022, which gives it a good mix of humor and violence. I thought it would just be a one-off like some of Stallone’s recent movies; mostly based on his name and performances, but Taylor Sheridan did a great job here writing a script worthy of Stallone’s performance.
If it keeps up like this, great, if it gets better, great
I find it fun to watch macho Stallone build a criminal empire from scratch in the middle of nowhere in Tulsa. I love how it sometimes has a western feel to it, even though it’s still mafia. I think the show could go unnoticed and then cause an uproar with people asking how they never heard of it before because I haven’t seen a lot of Paramount commercials. I didn’t have high expectations, but if the first episode is any indication, this could be really fun.
I’ll add a rating when more episodes are released, and update if anything changes dramatically in the series
